Present: David Killory, Ted Alexiades, Brian Phillips, John Tzimorangas, Pam Harty, Phil Edmunson, Rob Baynes.
Absent: Russ Heissner.
Phil: estimates length of committee at two town meetings, until April of 2008 (1.5 years). Vote to accept minutes at next meeting, once accepted email to town clerk. Secretary emails minutes to committee.
Rob: mentioned zero energy building at shipyard.
David: mentioned private planning, codes, zoning.
Phil: focus on what public is interested in.
David: list specific things for public buildings.
Phil: general recommendations for other energy uses, codes, planning and zoning are more complicated. Town meetings are good for seeing what the public thinks about new ideas. Ask Chairman Russ Heissner to call the next meeting.
Everyone talked about their background and interests.
Pam: interested in wind energy, following cape wind and Hull. How to get the public interested in conservation?
John: HMLP
Brian: elec. engineer, energy management industry (NSTAR). Specializes in reducing consumption.
Ted: town accountant, town energy use, consumption. Reduce demand.
David: school system, comfortable environment, energy usage, tracking usage. Member of school building committee. AI3 is the school architect, green, doing ROI of energy use.
Discussion of green building techniques, financing.
Propose Wednesday, monthly meetings, flexible times afternoon to evenings. Pending Russ’s schedule, he will call the next meeting.
Brian: investigate town owned buildings, energy consumption, vehicle fleet. Ted has this data.
Ted: consumption overall picure. Develop inventory, costs to run. Guidelines for new buildings: 4th school, new fire station, DPW complex, middle school renovation, country club renovation.
John: just finished country club and school buildings energy audit. Will get copies of report.
Ted, Phil: building committees need to spec. green components. Need a template for the building committees.
John: over the last 3 years average home energy consumption has increased from 660 to 770 kWh.
Pam: meteorological tower, how do we pay for this? So we can research a wind project. Ask in town meeting. Politics of town meeting discussion ensues. Perhaps John can put up the tower, it avoids asking the town and getting early, possibly negative, publicity?
Brian: John Murdoch – Hull elec. manager, has data on their turbine.
Ted: how town funding works.
John: what is the end result – the HLP would own the turbine, so it should do the research.
Ted: will get list of town facilities, and cost to run.
David: perhaps we should focus on the big topics.
New development, building codes – require shipyard be green? Rob look into what powers the planning/zoning boards have. See Katie Lacie, head of planning board. NY, NJ subsidize solar panels and selling back energy. Google “residential solar panel”
Ted: protocol, chairman posts the meetings. Propose next meeting Wednesday, Dec. 20, 7pm.
