Hingham's Fourth of July
2010 Parade Grand Marshall - Thomas L. P. O'Donnell
The Fourth of July Parade Committee is thrilled to announce the 2010 Grand Marshal is Thomas L. P. O'Donnell. As we celebrate Hingham’s 375th birthday, it seems only appropriate that we honor someone who has been such a steadfast and stabilizing force in Hingham for more than half a century. Tom and his wife, Carol (Hodgdon), moved to Hingham in 1955, just three years after they were married. Tom began his volunteer service for the town soon after they arrived.

Tom served as a member and chairman of the Advisory Committee and of the Board of Appeals and on the committee that recommended the first (Lincoln) historic district for the Town. Mr. O’Donnell was initially elected as Moderator in 1967 and has been re-elected each following year! Most people see Tom once a year with his trademark bow tie, as he conducts Town Meeting. However, the role of Moderator is active year round appointing members to various town committees.
Tom’s life before Hingham was also very active and accomplished. Tom served in the Navy during World War II and was recalled during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Lieutenant. He received an A.B. degree magna cum laude from Harvard College and an LL.B. degree from Harvard Law School. He was elected first marshal of his college class of 1947 and served as an elected director of the Harvard Alumni Association and as an Overseer of Harvard University, chairing the visiting committees to the Law School and School of Public Health. Since 1949 he has been with the law firm of Ropes & Gray LLP in Boston, of which he was formerly chairman and managing partner and is now of counsel.
Tom has been active in many, many educational, charitable and civic affairs. He was actively involved in the successful effort to have World’s End acquired by The Trustees of Reservations in 1967. This remains one of his favorite places in Hingham! In 2001, Tom and Carol were co-recipients of the Alexis de Tocqueville award from the United Way of Massachusetts Bay. Together, they raised four children, and are blessed with nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Carol passed away on May 14 of this year.
To close this narrative on the 2010 Grand Marshal, it is appropriate to use Tom O’Donnell’s own words of encouragement and provide a wonderful sentiment, “Hingham has grown larger in 55 yrs, of course, and its issues more complex and pressing. But it is as lovely as ever and the tradition of generous volunteer service to the Town, which I embraced as a newcomer in 1955, has continued to flourish. Long may it continue!”
