Naming Policy Development Committee

Charge, adopted June 1 2009 by Board of Selectmen

  • Conduct a review of other towns’ naming policies to the degree possible

  • Recommend which public board/committee has the ( master) authority to name the following municipal properties:
    1. Buildings
    2. Playgrounds
    3. Parks
    4. Athletic Fields
    5. Rooms within a building
    6. Memorial Plaques

  • Recommend criteria for eligibility for naming each of the above
    1. Living, deceased, period of time elapsed since service or none
    2. Specific and extraordinary contribution to the town or at the state, federal or international level (define by example)

  • Recommend a policy and procedure to handle exceptional cases which conflict with the policy

  • Recommend a policy on naming facilities for financial consideration or fundraising purposes

  • Recommend a procedure for submitting the nomination for a request of naming municipal property after a person

    1. Process for submission
    2. Responsible public entity for handling
    3. Procedure for securing public input

  • Review and research the process for approving the new policy (Town Meeting, executive order, etc.)

  • Recommend a process for promulgating the newly established policy to the community

Added to the Naming Committee charge by the Board of Selectmen, July 17, 2009:

  • Bring recommendations to Town Meeting, April 2010

  • Strongly consider recommending the policy be a By-Law

  • Determine extent of naming authority – from buildings to bricks and in between.
