Sgt. Horte called the meeting to order at 7:15 PM.

The topic of this evening’s meeting was to revisit parking problems in Hingham Square, more specifically where the merchants and their employees are parking. Town Administrator Charles J. Cristello was present to take part in this discussion. He explained that the Town of Hingham “leases” what is commonly referred to as the Merchant’s Lot. This is the lower parking lot situated between Central and Main Streets. This lot is maintained and plowed by the Town. He felt it was time to regulate this lot with regard to merchant/employee parking.

Judy Sneath was present to explain her thoughts on employee parking in the Square. She had done a survey of the merchants/employees regarding their parking practices (copy attached) and presented a map of the Square with some suggestions for additional parking spaces (copy attached).

Much discussion ensued regarding ways to alleviate some of the problems created by merchants/employees parking in the Square area. Sgt. Horte said there had been some discussion of limiting the parking in the Merchants Lot to 2 hours but having an exemption by “parking sticker” for merchants. There was further discussion on this suggestion that resulted in the following recommendation:

Paul Healey made a motion that the Traffic Committee recommend to the Board of Selectmen that the Merchant’s Parking Lot be restricted to a 2-hour parking limit subject to a stickered parking permit issued to employees of retail merchants in the Square, the details of which will be decided prior to the next regularly scheduled Traffic Committee meeting. This motion was seconded by Leslie Kehoe with all members in favor.

This recommendation will be made to the Board of Selectmen.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 PM.
