Hingham Board of Hingham
Tetanus Booster

Tetanus (also known as lockjaw) and diphtheria are both diseases caused by bacteria. A germ that enters the body through a cut or wound causes tetanus. Tetanus can occur when soil containing the tetanus bacteria gets into any break in the skin. Tetanus bacteria can enter the body through wounds or bites or through small scratches, burns, and slivers that may go unnoticed. Diphtheria spreads from one person to another when an infected person has coughed, sneezed or from sharing the same beverage. Vaccination is the best way to protect against tetanus and diphtheria. Because of the vaccination, there are many fewer cases of these diseases.

Tetanus and diphtheria are both prevented by a tetanus/diphtheria vaccine called Td. Everyone needs protection. If you have not had a booster in ten years or more, you should be vaccinated. A simple way to remember the booster is to get the injection on your mid-decade birthday-ages 45,55,65,75, and so on. The Hingham Board of Health offers the vaccine free of charge and by appointment. Call 781-741-1466 and the Public Health Nurse will schedule a time convenient for you!
