Board of Selectmen - Minutes

 November 20, 2006
Special Session 5:05 PM
Mr. Edmundson, Ms. Tully, Mr. Riley

Mr. Edmundson explained that the Board would hold a special session this evening due to the early newspaper deadline for the Thanksgiving holiday.  There are two issues that require attention.

Ms. Tully advised that the Central Fire Station Building Committee had completed its work and has a bid that will require additional funds and it is important to allow the Town to vote on this.  Ms. Boland noted that the Committee has not had an opportunity to say if it is worth spending that amount of money in that location.  She also said that there was a very narrow scope that limited the committee.  Ms. Tully advised that the earliest committee meeting chose a location, and then developed a scope of work and both fire chiefs have supported this choice of location.  Mr. Boland remarked that there was no reference to the committee's participating in the choice of location in the minutes.  Mr. Reeves also questioned the location saying that the vast majority of calls for service were from South and West Hingham, not from the center.

The Board noted that this project would be accomplished within the tax levy.

Mr. Edmundson explained that a few weeks ago while preparing to remove the remains of buildings in Bare Cove Park, shingles containing asbestos were discovered.  The discovery was reported to the Department of Environmental Protection as required.  The DEP wants the area cleaned up.  The cost of this clean up is more than can be paid out of the Town's engineering budget so it is necessary to seek funds from Town Meeting.
