Q: Can sewer use bills be paid online?
A: Yes, sewer use bills can now be paid online by visiting http://www.hingham-ma.gov/treasurer/Online_Bill_Payment.html
Q: How do I know if Town sewer runs past my house?
A: Sewer service is available to approximately 1/3 of the Town. The North Sewer District is comprised of North Hingham, West Hingham, the Crow Point section and Downtown areas. The Weir River Sewer District is comprised of Rockland Street from Kilby Street to West Corner including all of the side streets in-between and Hull Street from Pine Street to West Corner.
Q: Do I have to connect if sewer runs past my house?
A: No, there are currently no regulations that would require you to connect if your septic system is working properly.
**Any questions regarding your septic system should be directed to the Hingham Board of Health.
Q: Where does the flow go after it leaves my house?
A: All of the flow from the North Sewer District gets pumped directly to the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority. Flow from the Weir River Sewer District gets pumped to the wastewater treatment plant in Hull.
Q: Is there a fee for connecting to Town Sewer?
A: Yes, for existing houses in the North Sewer District, there is a one-time fee of $1000. For houses in the newly constructed Weir River Sewer District, the only fee would be the betterment charge, which is an equal share of the total cost of the project.
Q: How are bills figured out?
A: Bills are based on 100% water usage, based on readings that are provided to us by Aquarion Water Company.
Q: How often are bills sent out?
A: Bills are sent out twice every year. The fall bill is a minimum bill of $150 or half of the previous years total bill, whichever is greater. The spring bill is based on actual water consumption.
Q: How much do sewer bills average per year?
A: Bills vary depending on the amount of water used, but $165 per person per year is a rough estimate.
Q: Is there any way to get a discount off my sewer bill?
A: Yes, if you do a lot of outside watering, you can have a second water meter installed to read the amount of non-sewer disposed water and have that total deducted from your bill.
Q: What do I do if I have a back-up in my house?
A: You can call us before calling for service, we can verify that the mainline in front of your house is flowing properly. If the problem is in the street, we will take care of it at that time.
Q: Can you recommend a contractor to repair my sewer line?
A: We will not recommend any contractors, but will furnish you with a list of contractors licensed through this office for any repairs, modifications or installations to sewer lines.
Q: Can I discharge my sump pump into the sewer system?
A: No. Sump pumps, roof leaders, floor drains or any other sources of surface run-off should not be allowed to enter the sewer system.
